This tutorial is for Mac & Windows users.
First of all, before you start using this tutorial to jailbreak your iPhone, we invite you to read it over several times. It is important that you understand what jailbreaking your iPhone means and the benefits you gain from it. Refer to our iPhone terminology section to find out more about jailbreaking. Make sure you have understood all technical terms before starting this procedure!
Redsn0w is a jailbreak for iPhone which does not restore your iPhone. You have to restore before running these tools. Restoring will wipe your iPhone completely. This means you will loose all of your data, so make sure to make a backup before restoring in iTunes.
Also, make sure NOT to install the 3.1 firmware for iPhone through iTunes. At this point of time there is no official jailbreak for the 3.1 firmware!
RedSn0w runs on both MAC and Windows and is very easy to use. We have tested it several times on different iPhone models. Some other sites have tutorials which miss several steps you HAVE to respect, so make sure to follow our procedure closely. The screenshots you will see below have been taken on a Mac but the procedure is identical for Windows users. The procedure may be slightly different for 2G iPhones, but RedSn0w will guide you step by step.
What more is that RedSn0w will unlock your iPhone 2G too. To unlock your iPhone 3G or 3GS, refer to this tutorial.
So let's get started!
Step One
- Update your iTunes to the latest version.
- Create a folder on your desktop called Pwnage.
- Download following files and save them to the Pwnage folder you just created. All these files are also available from our "Download" section.
- For iPhone 2G jailbreak: Bootloader 3.9 and 4.6.
- Download RedSn0w for Mac or for Windows.
For following step, please note that if you are using Safari you MUST disable the "auto unzip" feature. To configure this, simply open Safari, click on Safari > Preferences > General and uncheck the "Open "safe" files after downloading" option. Otherwise simply use Firefox (or Internet Explorer if you are a PC user).
Go to our "Downloads" page, download the correct 3.0.1 AND 3.0.0 firmware depending on the model of your iPhone and place them in the same folder. (it is important that you download both versions and make sure to NOT download the 3.1 version)
- Go to the folder you placed all these files in and extract the RedSn0w application zip file to the same folder.
Step Two
- Connect your iPhone to the computer and launch iTunes.
- Make sure to select your iPhone from the list of devices on the left.
Important!
Mac users: Hold down your Option/alt key.
Pc users: Hold down your Shift key.
- Whilst holding the above named button down, click the "Restore" button in iTunes. This will open a seperate window (but only if you held down the button described in last step properly)
- Navigate to the Pwnage folder you created previously (which should be on your desktop) and select the 3.0.1 version of the firmware. You should then see following window.
- Now just give iTunes some time to update your iPhone with the firmware. When iTunes has finished, proceed to step three.
Step Three
- Now that iTunes has updated your iPhone with the firmware, navigate to the Pwnage folder on your desktop and launch Redsn0w.
- Once RedSn0w has launched, click the "Browse" button and select the 3.0 version of the firmware, and not the 3.0.1 as RedSn0w may ask you to do. This is one of the little bugs in RedSn0w.
- Once the firmware has been "successfully identified", simply click the "Next" button.
- As you can see on the screenshot below, make sure that "Install Cydia" is checked. You can decide to install Icy too, but that's a personal choice.
- Now simply click "Next".
Following steps only concern iPhone 2G users. If you are not an iPhone 2G user, skip to step four.
- If you are jailbreaking an iPhone 2G, and you wish to also unlock it, make sure to check the "Unlock" box too.
- Then click "Next" and you will be taken to following page.

- Click the "Browse" button and select the 3.9 and 4.6 Bootloader previously downloaded. They should be in your Pwnage folder on your Desktop.
- Then click "Next".
Step four
Now comes a part which may be a bit tricky, so follow our instructions closely before proceeding.
- RedSn0w will ask you to make sure your device is both OFF and PLUGGED IN to the computer. Don't click "Next" yet as it will directly launch the next step. Take your time to read this over before proceeding.
- RedSn0w will now guide you trough the steps to enter DFU Mode. You will have to proceed as follows as soon as you click "Next":
- Hold down the Power button (top right-hand corner) for 3 seconds
- Without releasing the Power button, push the Home button (bottom center) for 10 seconds.
- Without releasing the Home button, release the Power button BUT KEEP holding the Home button for 30 seconds.
This following screen will show up and guide you through these above mentioned named 3 steps as soon as you click "Next".

Your iPhone should now reboot automatically. If your iPhone does NOT reboot automatically, simply unplug the USB cable from your iPhone and plug it back in again. Then the reboot should be launched automatically. This is another tiny bug in RedSn0w.
Well, that's it!
Just wait for RedSn0w to finish its job and you are ready to use your iPhone.
