Acrossair, a company we already talked about in this article, has just launched several augmented reality apps in the iPhone AppStore.
These apps exclusively work on the iPhone 3GS because they need to use the compass and the GPS functionality of your iPhone to locate you.
Here a list of some of their available applications as well as direct links to the apps on the AppStore:
- New York Nearest Subway (AppStore link)
- Paris Nearest Métro (AppStore link)
- Barcelona Nearest Metro (AppStore link)
- Madrid Nearest Metro (AppStore link)
- Nearest Tube London (AppStore link)
- NearestWiki (AppStore link)
Let's take a closer look at one of these apps which I have had the chance to test. Thanks for the promo code Acrossair :-)
NearestWiki
NearestWiki is like your very own information portal in augmented reality view.
Have you ever walked past a building and wanted to know more details about it?
Well, that's just what NearestWiki is all about.
Once you launch NearestWiki and hold your iPhone vertically, the app will check your location with the GPS and compass function of your iPhone.
Then it pulls in information about buildings and attractions around you from Wikipedia and overlays it on the image you see through your iPhone's camera.
Although several of these applications have already been available on the Android platform, this is the first fully functional one for the iPhone. It is a good proof of concept and showing off app, and we here at iPhone.lu are sure that this is only the beginning of an amazing bunch of augmented reality apps heading our way.
Here a small video of the app:
